This was our longest train travel day, involving 6 hours on high speed ICE trains, with a transfer in Munich, followed by half an hour on 2 different U-Bahn trains in Vienna before reaching our hotel.
We had the last of four amazing hotel breakfasts before receiving the alert from Deutsche Bahn that our first train was delayed due to a medical emergency on board and would no longer be on time for us to make our connection in Munich.

Several travel alternatives were offered, involving simply choosing one in the app and reserving seats.

On our long stretch from Munich to Vienna, I plugged in my phone and completed the final blog post for Nuremberg, which I was too tired to finish last night. I’m finding that trying to choose photos and write on the much smaller screen on my iPhone is quite tiring because it’s so much harder on my eyes. Glasses on. Glasses off. Squint, select, insert, and then one-finger peck out the story because I never learned to speed type with my thumbs like the young’uns do. Don’t even get me started on autocorrect.
I’m determined to chronicle our trip though.
Sustenance for my task came by way of moist rich lemon cake and black coffee; son #1 had a burger and fries with mayonnaise.

We boarded our first train of the day at 10:30, and arrived in Vienna at 16:40, with another 30 minutes of local transit to go (after buying tickets at the appropriate kiosk).
Our hotel is directly across from Schönbrunn Palace, and is famously where Thomas Alva Edison lived while in Vienna. The exterior is Hapsburg yellow, and the interior as full of chandeliers and imperial imagery as one might expect.

Because I booked through our Expedia account, we get 25% off at the hotel’s Schloss Café restaurant. After a long travel day it was nice not to have to make a decision about ehrte to eat, and we both made the easy choice of Wiener schnitzel.

Tomorrow our schedule has us visiting the Natural History Museum , taking a tour of the grand Vienna Opera House, and attending an evening concert at the Musikverein.
I’m looking forward to three days of sharing Vienna with our eldest son… and a good night’s sleep.
