Episode 502 – Snapshots from March in Maple Ridge

It’s been a “lay low” kind of month between international travels, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t made memories we’ll want to be able to look back on.

March 4th. Still chilly, but nice enough for a walk along and over Kanaka Creek’s Rainbow Bridge (named for its arc shape)

In addition to the robins, the first pussy willow catkins have appeared-
a sure sign of spring.

March 9th. The first time we’ve hosted guests in one of our rentals since a full year ago while we were in Mérida Mexico. What a treat to be able to cook for company (a newly discovered Ancestry DNA-match distant cousin and her hubby who live here in BC) and enjoy an evening of interesting conversation. Bottom: as our starter I made a Bosc pear and field green salad with cinnamon glazed pecans, mango Stilton cheese, ginger and turmeric vinaigrette, and a home-made Parmesan and black pepper tuile, served on our VRBO’s pretty blue and white tableware.

Does anything say spring better than bright yellow tulips?
Thanks for brightening our space, Sue!

March 13th. Sunset on the Fraser River at Port Haney.

March 17th. Hiking in Kanaka Creek Regional Park. The still really cold water sparkled in the sunshine as it flowed over interesting rock formations in shallow rapids and several small waterfalls.

March 20th. Catching the bus for the first leg of a 3 hour transit trip to the airport to pick up my best friend.

March 22nd. Here we are on the right today, almost exactly 10 years since Ted took the photo of us on the left. Darn, but we’ve aged well! (As have our Columbia fleeces) 😆

March 28th. It’s all about good food when we visit with son #2.
Top: homemade osso bucco Milanese topped with (also homemade) gremolata, served over creamy polenta. Bottom: #2 makes the best lattes, this time with freshly roasted Kenyan beans from local Maple Ridge roastery Luna, run by 2 young entrepreneurs originally from Ottawa.

March 30th. Overlooking the Fraser River from Kanaka Creek Park. We never tire of staring at mountains and water…. and cherry blossoms!

That’s it for March.

Over the next two days we’ll celebrate a late Easter dinner with son #2’s family, I’ll get re-blonded ( if that’s not a word it should be), and we’ll finish packing (list, as usual, to follow). Our next adventure begins April 3rd when we board a plane to Fort Lauderdale to meet the Regal Princess for our cruise to England.
