Episode 824 – Just for Fun: The World’s Largest Lego Store

Who knew that not New York City, nor Los Angeles, or even more logically somewhere in Denmark, boasts the world’s biggest LEGO certified store. Of course, there are LEGOLAND venues that are much bigger, but they are not exclusively stores.

It turns out that world’s largest LEGO store is located right here in Sydney, Australia, in the Pitt Street Mall within the Sydney Arcade, just 5 minutes from our hotel. It opened in November 2023, spanning 900 square meters (almost 9700 square feet) across two levels.

We’ve been in huge toy stores in both NYC and LA, with some really, really big LEGO models, but nothing as ambitious as those we saw today.

Here the biggest builds are Australian-themed.

The LEGO model of the Manly Ferry was big enough for Ted to steer.

Steering a ferry is serious business!

It thoughtfully included a route map inside.

I rode along.

In total, the ferry took 182,095 bricks and 1,141 hours to construct.

The huge Rainbow Gum Eucalyptus Tree, full of Australian animals, used 183,394 bricks and took 1,272 hours to put together.

The massive Sydney Opera House wall even included reflections in Sydney Harbour. It used 303,719 bricks and took 1,058 hours to complete.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge “under construction” was by far the largest build, and had lots of humourous elements. It used 728,964 bricks and took 3,851 hours to build.

There were lots of (relatively) smaller whimsical LEGO creations in the store.

I got to be “Watermelon Guy”, as well as dancing with a LEGO ballerina!

Neither of us dared sit in the Harry Potter chair though.

It seemed appropriate to end with one more cute koala… but where were the kangaroos? Maybe they’re still a work in progress.

  1. Fun to see the Manly Ferry — we stayed in Manly for a couple of months waiting for our house to be ready when we moved to Sydney for just 10 months or so in 1969. I think my dad took that ferry to Sydney downtown (that’s where I think it went — right?) to his office at IBM.

    Have you seen rainbow gum trees yet? They have some in a botanical garden on Maui — really incredibly beautiful.
