Episode 159 – Anchored Off Cabo San Lucas

Last night we had our second delicious dinner at Manfredi’s, followed by singer Michael Washington’s tribute to the music of Ray Charles, and this morning we woke up anchored off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Dinner was amazing, but the service was even better. My Sogliona al Limone (Dover sole sautéed in lemon, parsley and butter sauce) came with a show of it’s own: our incredible waiter expertly deboning it.

Left top to bottom (Ted’s dinner): Bruschetta alla Caprese with fresh housemade burrata cheese, sundried tomatoes and basil; Bistecca Fiorentina, the Viking signature ribeye steak that is coated in garlic oil, rubbed with porcini mushroom powder, kosher salt, brown sugar and chili flakes and marinated for 72 hours so that it absolutely melts in your mouth; and panna cotta. Under that slightly sweet crumble hides a layer of tangy mandarin marmalade and a pot of silky smooth cream. Divine.
Dinner wine: Garofoli Kamaros rosé
Right top to bottom (Rose’s dinner): Spaghetti alle Vongole appetizer with clams, spinach, peperoncino and lardo (that’s bacon!); Sogliona al Limone (my Dover sole) with its perfectly crisped exterior; coffee gelato affogato (gelato drowned in a shot of hot espresso).
Dinner wine: Chateau Ste. Michelle 2018 Columbia Valley Riesling.
There’s a reason we looked so happy – wonderful food and stellar service!
Michael’s energetic and soulful renditions of a selection of Ray Charles’ hits had the audience clapping along. His costume for the first half was pretty “cool” too.

The Baja peninsula (above) sure looks different than it did when the Spanish used it as a pit stop on their routes, and later when pirates used it as a base of operations from which to plunder Spanish galleons. It is a popular sport-fishing destination for marlin, but an even more popular destination for catching a glimpse of the rich and famous at play – and potentially their luxury yachts.

“El Arco” (seen sideways bottom right, which obscures the actual arch formation) is a distinctive rock formation just outside Cabo’s harbour. Here where the landscape makes it impossible to build another resort you can almost imagine a pirate ship moored, using the sandy cove as a base of operations. The only pirates here today are the hotel chain operators and visitors on huge cruise ships, like the Carnival Miracle anchored near us.

We’ve been here before (Episode 52 – The Two Cabos) . In 2019, we skipped the kitschy port area with its discount pharmacies and novelty t-shirt vendors, and travelled by bus past the beautiful hotels, resorts, and vacation homes along El Malecón to San José del Cabo, the more subdued sister city to Cabo San Lucas.

San José del Cabo is the oldest Spanish mission on the peninsula, featuring a lovely traditional town square and a truly beautiful church. Having toured it before, and finding out that with fewer guides available our “tour” would actually just be free time, we decided not to go ashore.

Those touring today will be taking tenders from Deck A aft on the starboard side. Pictured above is one of our tenders, proudly flying the Norwegian flag, returning from Cabo to pick up another load of passengers.
There was a bit of excitement when a flare on one of the tenders was accidentally activated. Now we know what the signal smoke looks (and smells!) like.

Despite having had a series of sea days, we were nonetheless quite happy to remain on board, with Ted taking photos from the decks, and me just lounging and writing.

After a truly relaxing day, we enjoyed another gorgeously presented and flavourful tasting menu at The Chef’s Table tonight, made even more special for being shared with fellow world cruisers Allan and Karin, who we’d met virtually last fall via the Viking Star World Cruise 2021-22 Facebook group. One of the advantages of a really long cruise like this is the opportunity to get to know some of our shipmates better, and where better than over dinner?

Tonight’s theme was “Lotus”, with a Pan-Asian menu designed by Viking’s Director of Culinary Development, Chef Anthony Mauboussin.

Top to bottom: Amuse Bouche: the cute round Goan Potato Chop, actually a semolina-coated potato, vegetable, and cheese cake served on a sambal spinach puree tasted like an ultra elegant take on a vegetable pakora with saag paneer, one of my favourite Indian vegetarian dishes. Paired with an off-dry La Pettegola Vermentino, made from the only white grapes grown in Tuscany.
First course: an absolutely delectable Singapore-style chili soft shell crab. The touch of cilantro and squirt of fresh lime pushed the already vibrant taste over the top. Paired with a Selbach Oster Riesling from Germany’s Moselle Valley.
Palate Cleanser: Red Lotus granita, a sweet and refreshing ice made with lychee and guava, and topped with a delicate foam with a hint of cranberry juice.
Main course: Thai-spiced rack of lamb. I’d be hard-pressed to decide between this lamb, served with a veal and soy sauce reduction, and the crab as my favourite parts of the meal. The lamb was melt-in-your-mouth tender and absolutely perfectly medium rare. Paired with a Brazin Old Vine Zinfandel from Lodi California (my least favourite wine of the evening)
Dessert: delicately citrusy yuzu cheesecake, with a sweet and crunchy green tea tuile twist, served on a brushstroke of sake-marinated plum preserve. Paired with candy-sweet Christina Ascheri Moscato d’Asti DOCG from Piedmont Italy.

After dinner, we headed for the Star Theater for a musical variety show featuring the full complement of the ship’s entertainment team, from our Cruise Director, to the Viking Band, Viking Vocalists, classical string duo, resident pianist, and (our personal favourite) resident guitarist, King.

The full ensemble finale was “One Day More” from Les Miserables.

We’re hearing rumours of yet further itinerary changes after we leave LA, but we’re in it for the long haul. Honestly, it’s all more than we ever thought we’d be experiencing in our retirement, no matter where the Viking Star takes us.

  1. Glad you got ashore again and you made the wise choice to forego Sammy Hager’s bar and head on down to San Jose del Cabo, a place that I love. Such a different ambience from its sister town of Cabo. We arrived back in Florida last night and are glad to be away from the -10 cold of the last few days. Enjoy yourselves, sounds like you are!
